A team of five specialists from the Faculty of Food Science and Engineering, the Faculty of Science and Environment and the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy have designed an alcohol-based disinfectant for individual use. This disinfectant could be a backup if the existing stock on the market runs out.

“We have the complete formula, it is a disinfectant with more than 70% alcohol, but it also contains substances meant to protect the dermis. Currently, tests are carried out in the laboratory of the Faculty of Food Science and Engineering directly on cultures, to see its microbiological activity. At the end of the week we will know if we have a viable backup solution for emergencies. First and foremost, we want a superior product for internal use within the University and then, if there are requests, we can produce it on a large scale. But for this, the product will need validation from the specialized institutions,” Professor Lucian Puiu GEORGESCU, PhD, the Rector of “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati, stated.

So far, Galați City Hall and Galați County Council have been interested in purchasing this disinfectant.

In certain quantities, the disinfectant may be produced in the school laboratory of the Faculty of Food Science and Engineering or in the chemistry laboratory of the Faculty of Science and Environment. The interdisciplinary team from "Dunarea de Jos" University of Galati wants to obtain a disinfectant that will provide 100% safety at the individual level.
